Submission guidelines
The agency is open to submissions from writers and illustrators working on children's/young adult book projects, but does not currently consider submissions from writers or illustrators living outside the UK and Ireland. AI generated submissions are not accepted; any use of generative AI in the creation of submitted work must be clearly flagged, and it is strongly recommended that the covering email is written without generative AI. AI-generated illustrations (eg cover art) will not enhance a submission, for any age category. For all submissions: send by email to submissions@alicewilliamsliterary.co.uk. Briefly introduce the submission, mentioning genre, age and word count. Include information about the writer/illustrator, including any books already published, writing/illustration courses taken, and current location. Fiction: pitch the novel in the body of the email, ideally a single paragraph outlining the main themes and/or story arc. Attach the full typescript as a Word doc, formatted with double line spacing. Attach a synopsis of the novel outlining the entire plot arc, including the ending, in one side of A4. Picture book texts: attach two or three texts in separate Word documents. Full synopses are not necessary, but the main themes of the texts can be outlined in the body of the email. Non-fiction: give a brief overview of the book concept, proposed length, structure, readership, and comparable published books. Attach three sample spreads or chapters. Illustrators: mention whether developing own book ideas or preferring to work as an illustrator only. If a worked-up dummy book exists, attach as a low-res pdf (not a download link). Not every spread needs to be polished artwork. Include a link to a portfolio on a website and/or Instagram.
AI policy
They do not accept AI generated submissions. Any use of generative AI in the creation of work submitted to them must be clearly flagged. They also strongly recommend that you write your covering email without the use of generative AI. Similarly, AI-generated illustrations (eg cover art) will not enhance your submission, for any age-category.
