About

Andrew founded the Andrew Lownie Literary Agency in 1988.

He read history at Magdalene College, Cambridge, gained an MSc and doctorate at Edinburgh University, and began his publishing career at Hodder & Stoughton before becoming an agent at John Farquharson. He is also an author and biographer, with prize-winning books including a biography of the spy Guy Burgess and two Sunday Times bestsellers, The Mountbattens and Traitor King.

Agency submission guidelines

Submissions are accepted only by email (not by post). Non-fiction: send a 1-page mini-synopsis highlighting what makes the book new and special with proposed word count and delivery date; a 1-page note on qualifications to write the book; a 1-page note on the five most recent competing and comparable books (author, title, publisher, date of publication) with a note on how they relate to the author's own book; a 1-page note on sources used; a 1-page note on specialist marketing outlets such as websites, organisations or magazines; a synopsis of about half a page per chapter (roughly ten pages in total); and a sample chapter. Do not send blanket submissions addressed to multiple agents at the same time, and ensure submissions are well-spelt, well-presented and grammatical.
