Agency submission guidelines

Submissions go to individual agents by email; each agent's profile sets out what to send and where. Some agents use a dedicated submissions inbox, others accept work in their own inbox. Paper submissions are no longer accepted. Adult fiction: a cover letter, a one page synopsis of about 500 words, and a sample of up to 10,000 words. Individual agents' requirements may differ. Non-fiction: a writing sample of two or three chapters or 10,000 words, an outline of the structure, ideally a chapter breakdown, and an overview of the idea including why the book is relevant today. Children's and YA: children's writers, illustrators and writer-illustrators, and children's and YA graphic novels, through the Children's division. Not accepted: poetry. Plays, screen and theatre go to the TFTV department. The agency reads work from writers living anywhere in the world; a very limited number of agents accept French and Italian submissions.
