Submission guidelines

Flame Tree Press accepts submissions for its speculative fiction novel imprint and, at intervals, for themed short story anthologies. Illustrated non-fiction is not considered, and general anthology or newsletter windows are announced separately rather than open year round. Novels: send by email to submissions@flametreepress.com. Include a synopsis of no more than 3 paragraphs, the word count, the whole manuscript in.doc,.docx or.rtf format with the author's name and email on the manuscript itself, and a writer's CV summarising previous publications, awards or recognition. Disclose if the manuscript has also been sent elsewhere. Word count (novels): 70,000 to 120,000 words. Preference: completely new, previously unpublished novels are preferred, though a previously released title may be considered if the author retains the rights. Agents: it is not necessary to use a literary agent. Short stories: only accepted for specific announced anthologies, not as general open submissions. Announcements appear on the Flame Tree website, blog, newsletter and social media, plus Duotrope, Horror Tree and Substack. Newsletter flash fiction: authors must first sign up to the Flame Tree Fiction Newsletter. Submit by email to flashfic@flametreepublishing.com in.doc,.docx or.rtf format, double-spaced, with the author's email at the top of the first page and the story theme as the email subject. Simultaneous submissions are allowed but must be sent in separate emails. Add full author details (published work, influences, hometown, social media links) at the end of the story. Only original, unpublished work is considered for the newsletter (reprints are accepted for anthology submissions). Word count must fall strictly within 700-1000 words, indicated at the top of the submission. Submission windows are usually two weeks and are announced monthly in the newsletter and on social media.
