Submission guidelines
Picture books: stories for children aged 3-5, aiming for 32-page books with 12 spreads or 40-page books with 16 spreads; author/illustrators should send a PDF manuscript showing each spread with text and image together, with the whole book in draft sketch and a minimum of three finished spreads. Separately, guidelines state picture books of 24 or 32 pages (story) with a word count of 500 words (1000 max) will be accepted; a brief synopsis and the complete first draft of the text must be sent as an attachment; an illustrator/author or duo should supply a minimum of two finished double-page spreads, with the remainder of the pages roughed out as a first draft. Comics/Graphic novels: welcomed for age groups 4-6, 6-9, 9-12, 13+ and Young Adult, with no explicit adult content. For longer format books, at least 10 draft spreads should be shown with at least 3 spreads in final art style, and a short synopsis of the entire story (spoilers included) is essential. Separately, guidelines state a full synopsis and sample of writing with brief written character studies and principal character sketches are required, and an illustrator/author or duo should supply a minimum of ten finished pages in the pitch. Non-fiction: titles are usually commissioned internally, but writers with expertise and a concept are welcome to submit; illustrators interested in children's non-fiction should send a link to their work. Pitches for non-fiction books of up to 90 pages will be accepted. Illustration only: illustrators without a text can submit a portfolio PDF or a link to their work online. Text only: fiction texts are more likely to be considered from author/illustrators, though exceptions have been made for exceptional works; non-fiction texts from writers may be sought for pairing with an illustrator. General: submissions are accepted by email only, not by post. PDF is the preferred format; one single document should be sent for the manuscript and one for any supporting info, with files kept small. A short bio (max 100 words) and a brief cover letter (max 100 words) should be included, along with any comparable published titles. Submissions should be sent to submissions@flyingeyebooks.com, with the subject line stating whether the project is a Picture Book, Graphic Novel or Illustrated Non-Fiction. The preferred file format is a PDF with a max attachment size of 15mb; for larger files, a link to a preferred file-sharing site should be provided.
